Lead Cloud Engineer (m/f/d)

As Lead Cloud Engineer (m/f/d) in Mannheim, you are responsible for the strategic and operational improvements of the company's cloud platform. The primary focus is on cost optimization of the AWS environment and supporting all application and platform teams in building and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines for efficient deployments. This role requires technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong collaboration skills across various teams.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Cost Management & Optimization:
- Develop and implement a cloud cost strategy to optimize AWS expenses (e.g., rightsizing, reserved instances, spot instances, FinOps principles)
- Introduce automated monitoring and reporting tools for cost tracking (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, CloudHealth, Kubecost)
- Collaborate with Finance and Procurement to plan and forecast cloud costs
CI/CD & Deployment Automation:
- Own the scalable, secure, and automated CI/CD platform
- Support application and platform teams in setting up and maintaining deployment pipelines (e.g., using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, AWS CodePipeline, ArgoCD, Terraform)
- Implement best practices for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Continuous Deployment to accelerate release cycles
Platform Architecture & Scalability:
- Ensure the architecture, availability, scalability, and security of the cloud platform
- Introduce and enhance observability, logging, and monitoring systems for a robust platform (e.g., using Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, AWS CloudWatch)
- Ensure security and compliance standards in the cloud environment
Collaboration & Enablement:
- Support all engineering teams in utilizing the cloud platform through best practices, training, and consulting
- Promote and implement self-service platforms for developers to improve productivity and efficiency
- Foster a DevOps and automation culture across the company
The skillset we are looking for
- Extensive experience in managing and optimizing AWS cloud infrastructure with a strong understanding of FinOps principles
- Deep knowledge of modern CI/CD technologies and expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi)
- Experience with container technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, EKS, and ECS, along with observability and monitoring solutions
- Strong understanding of security and compliance requirements in cloud infrastructure
- Analytical mindset with a focus on efficiency and cost control
- Strong communication skills to work across interdisciplinary teams
- Strategic vision to continuously evolve the cloud platform
- Ability to empower teams rather than creating central bottlenecks
